Welcome!
Although he lived in Phoenix, AZ most of his life, Bill Denney, was born Forrest Melville Sweiger, in Paris, IL, on December 28th, 1931. With a love for sports, Bill would begin his career by signing with the Braves Organization in 1948. He married in 1953, to Marlene Barwick.
A sports injury changed the path for Bill. The Braves farmed him out to the Magic Cowboys in Twin Falls, ID. Shortly after his move, he took a job as DJ at a local twin falls radio station. Sadly, Marlene and Bill would divorce in 1965.
A sad ending would birth a new beginning, giving Bill the chance to relive his love for sports. Needing a change and missing his hometown, he applied for a position at a local Phoenix television station as an Announcer. They wanted him. He made the move to Phoenix, AZ from Twin Falls, ID. Remarrying in 1968 to Joan Steinbaugh. A new life and career began. Working as a News Announcer, this would begin his 30 year long career as a local sportcaster. Through those accomplished years, he acheived many things and in 1985, Bill won an Emmy for Directing. He was also considered the "Dean of Arizona Sportcasters." It is obvious that Bill Denney had not only acheived more than one dream, but also earned a lifetime of respect.
Bill had five children. Rick, (William) Ronald and Deedrian with Marlene Denney. Joan and Bill had two daughters, Amber and Jennifer. He has 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Bill would be 78 this year.
Not only did Bill love to help with many nonprofit organizations and charities, before retiring, Bill was closely involved with two local fund raising organizations. One, still existing today under a different name, The Bill Denney Golf Classic (Now the Unity Golf Classic) raises funds for Native American Youth. The other, no longer active, The Bill Denney Baseball Bash, successfully raised money for the purpose of creating prostate cancer awareness.
